Happy Can Drive Week!!

Just a reminder that our can drive officially kicks off tomorrow!  If you are helping out, here are the assignments again.  If the class that you are assigned to hardly has any cans, feel free to help out any of the other classes. Just remember, when you send the money back to school that you have the teacher’s name on the envelope.

Can Drive Volunteers
Thank you for offering to return cans the week of Sept 28th. It is hard to judge when cans will need to be returned, but we are thinking they’ll need to be returned at least 3 times during the week Friday, Sept. 26th being one of those times. We would like to give an update to the school on Wednesday. Please have the cans returned at least once before then. Please send the MONEY to school as soon as you get it in an envelope; write the amount and what class it was from.
Mr. Tom is going to have the school’s front door opened around 7:30 am and after school the LEFT front door will be open until 6pm.
Again, thank you!!! If there is more than one parent helping with a class maybe you could work something out where you alternate days to come in. Here is the list of the parents returning the cans and the class they are responsible for:

Today- Reading logs- Just a reminder that students need to read 140 mins per week. They receive their new log on Monday and it's due the following Monday. In order to count time they have read, they have to record that it.  5th graders did know that last week but had a lot of them had a hard time remembering that. As well as counting up ( or dbl checking) their minutes to make sure they had 140 mins. If that was the case, they have a missing homework assignment today.

Tomorrow- Picture Day!!! Our class will have their pictures taken at 8:45 before gym.  Don't forget those order forms:)
Parent club meeting- There are two meeting tomorrow 9am or 7pm. Try to attend if you can:)

Thursday- Science Quiz and Book order are due.

5th Grade News

5th Grade News- Blog Update
We just sailed through the first two weeks!  Thank you so much for the wonderful start
to our year. We really appreciate the letters (Million Words) we have been receiving. They have helped us more than you can believe. If you havenʼt handed in the letters/notes yet, please do so as soon as you have time.

We also really appreciate the communication we have had so far. In addition to calling or emailing us, you can always write comments or questions in your childʼs agenda and on our Blogs.  When we see those comments, we will try to respond back that day. We look forward to another great week!

The 5th graders are getting used to our new routines, as well as learning how to take ownership of their own learning.  A few examples are... knowing when it's time to focus, realizing the right time to talk with neighbors, recognizing when not to reach into their desks, asking for help, and remembering what materials are needed for each of their classes.

Reading Homework
Remember your child needs to be reading throughout the week. The goal is to read at least 140 minutes in a week. When they do read, they can read anything as long as they are reading. You may want to suggest a book that will help them reach their 40 book challenge.

Agenda Reflection
Every Friday, your child will reflect on their biggest success of the week. As well as making note of missed homework or any warning for the week. Parent signature on those days count as a homework assignment.

What’s happening in…

Reading:  Students have been setting into reading workshop and have started reading their 40 book mission.
ELA+:  Students are crafting personal narratives, where they are bringing small moments to life for the reader.
Math: Students are studying fractions.  Be on the lookout for homework pages Mon-Thursday.
SS:  Students are reviewing government and the Constitution.  Each student has a set of 22 flashcards to help with some important vocabulary.  The quiz is on Friday, Sept. 25th.
Science: Students are working on understanding the scientific method. There is a quiz on Thursday, Sept. 24th.
